Top 10 Athens Travel Tips: Ancient Ruins, Rooftops, and Avoiding Tourist Traps
“Athens, the eye of Greece, mother of arts and eloquence.”
Athens is a beautiful contradiction. It is one of the world's oldest cities, yet it vibrates with a gritty, modern energy. Between the ancient marble of the Acropolis and the graffiti-covered walls of Psirri, you'll find a city that is loud, historical, and delicious.
However, Athens can be a heatwave in the summer and a maze of overpriced "mousaka" joints if you aren't careful. Here is your essential guide to conquering the Greek capital.
1.
Buy the "Combined Ticket" for Ruins
If you plan to see more than just the Parthenon, don't buy single tickets.
The Hack: Purchase the Combined Ticket (€30). It gives you access to the Acropolis, the Ancient Agora, the Roman Agora, Hadrian's Library, and more. It is valid for 5 days and saves you a significant amount of money and queuing time.
2.
Beat the Heat: The 8 AM Rule
The Acropolis is made of marble, which reflects heat and can reach 40°C+ (104°F) in summer.
The Rule: Be at the gates at 8:00 AM sharp. You will beat the cruise ship crowds and the midday sun. Alternatively, go two hours before sunset for the best golden hour photos, but morning is best for cooler air.
3.
Eat in Koukaki or Petralona, Not Plaka
Plaka is charming but is the "tourist heart" where prices are high and quality can be hit-or-miss.
The Hack: Walk 10–15 minutes away to the neighborhoods of Koukaki or Petralona. This is where locals eat. You'll find authentic "tavernas" serving real Greek food at half the price of the spots next to the ruins.
4.
Tap Water is Safe (Mostly)
Unlike the Greek islands, the tap water in Athens city center is perfectly safe to drink.
The Tip: Don't keep buying plastic bottles. Bring a reusable one and fill it up. It’s better for the environment and your wallet in the Greek heat.
5.
Beware of the "Free Bracelet" Scam
Near Monastiraki and the Acropolis entrance, people may approach you to put a "friendship bracelet" on your wrist for free.
The Warning: It is never free. Once it’s tied, they will demand money and can be very aggressive. Simply say "No" and keep walking without stopping.
6.
Rooftop Bars are a Necessity
Athens is best viewed from above, especially at night when the Acropolis is lit up.
The Tip: Head to a rooftop bar in Monastiraki (like A for Athens or 360 Degrees). Even if you just stay for one drink, the view of the illuminated Parthenon is the most iconic sight in the city.
7.
Watch the Change of Guards at Syntagma
It happens every hour, on the hour, in front of the Parliament.
The Ritual: The "Evzones" guards wear traditional uniforms with pom-poms on their shoes and perform a highly synchronized walk. The Hack: If you want the full ceremony with the band, go on Sunday at 11:00 AM. It’s free and very impressive.
8.
Use the Metro to/from the Airport
A taxi from the airport to the center is a flat rate of about €40–€55.
The Hack: The Blue Metro Line (Line 3) runs directly from the airport to Syntagma Square in 40 minutes for only €9. It’s clean, fast, and much cheaper than sitting in Athens traffic.
9.
Mount Lycabettus for Sunset
The highest point in Athens offers a 360-degree view of the city all the way to the sea.
The Tip: You can take a cable car (funicular) to the top, but it’s inside a tunnel with no view. The Hack: Walk up the path! It takes about 20–30 minutes, it's free exercise, and you get to see the view unfolding as you climb.
10.
Sunday is Flea Market Day
Monastiraki Flea Market is at its best on Sunday mornings.
The Tip: It becomes a massive, chaotic market where you can find everything from ancient coins to vintage cameras. Go early, be prepared to haggle, and watch your pockets, as it gets very crowded.
