Top 10 Dubai Travel Tips: Luxury, Laws, and How Not to Melt
“Dubai is a place where everything is possible.”
Dubai is a sci-fi city rising from the desert sands. It holds the world's tallest building, the biggest mall, and the most audacious architecture. It screams luxury. However, it is also a city with strict laws and extreme weather that can catch unprepared tourists off guard.
Visiting Dubai isn't just about spending money; it's about knowing how to spend it and how to respect the local culture. Here is your essential guide to enjoying the glitz without breaking the bank or the rules.
1.
The PDA Warning (Public Displays of Affection)
This is the most critical rule for couples. Dubai is conservative. Holding hands is generally tolerated (for married couples), but kissing or hugging in public is a strict "No." It can lead to fines or even deportation. Keep the romance for your hotel room and respect the local customs when you are in malls or on the street.
2.
Don't Visit in Summer (Unless You Like Saunas)
Dubai has two seasons: Hot and "Is this the surface of the sun?" Between May and September, temperatures regularly hit 45°C-50°C (113°F-122°F) with crushing humidity. You cannot walk outside for more than 5 minutes.
The Rule: Visit between November and March to enjoy the beaches and outdoor dining comfortably.
3.
Alcohol is Available, But Restricted
Contrary to popular belief, Dubai is not "dry," but you can't buy beer at a supermarket. Alcohol is served only in licensed hotels, bars, and clubs.
The Rule: Never, ever drink in public (on the street or beach) and never appear visibly drunk outside. Public intoxication is a serious offense. Stick to the hotel bars.
4.
Use the Metro (and get the Nol Card)
Taxis are everywhere, but they add up. The Dubai Metro is driverless, spotless, air-conditioned, and connects the Airport, Dubai Mall, and Marina efficiently.
The Hack: Get a Silver Nol Card. Also, try the "Gold Class" cabin at the front of the train for a panoramic view of the city skyline for just a few Dirhams more.
5.
Skip the 'At The Top' Deck, Go to the Lounge
Everyone wants to go up the Burj Khalifa. The standard observation deck (levels 124/125) is crowded and expensive.
The Hack: For a slightly higher price, book the "The Lounge" (levels 152-154) experience or book a table at At.mosphere restaurant. You get a drink and snacks included, skip the worst lines, and enjoy the view in luxury rather than in a crush of people.
6.
Dress Modestly in Malls and Old Dubai
In hotels and beach clubs, bikinis and shorts are fine. However, in public spaces like Dubai Mall or the souks in Deira, you should cover up.
The Rule: Shoulders and knees should be covered. Walking around a mall in swimwear or very revealing clothes is frowned upon and security may ask you to cover up.
7.
Cross the Creek for 1 Dirham
Forget the shiny skyscrapers for a moment and find the soul of the city.
The Hack: Go to Old Dubai (Deira/Bur Dubai) and take an Abra (traditional wooden boat) across the Dubai Creek. It costs exactly 1 AED (about $0.27). It is the cheapest and most authentic experience in the entire city.
8.
Use 'The Entertainer' to Save Thousands
Dubai is expensive.
The Hack: If you are staying for a week or traveling as a group, download The Entertainer app. It offers "Buy 1 Get 1 Free" vouchers for thousands of restaurants, theme parks, and spas. It costs money to buy the app package, but you will make that money back in just one or two nice dinners.
9.
Friday is a Work Day Now
For years, the UAE weekend was Friday-Saturday. As of 2022, they shifted to the Western standard: Saturday-Sunday weekend.
The Note: Friday is a half-day for many businesses (due to Friday prayers), but Saturday and Sunday are now the official days off when malls and beaches will be busiest.
10.
WhatsApp is Voice-Call Blocked
If you plan to call home, know this: WhatsApp calls and FaceTime often don't work in the UAE due to regulations protecting local telecom companies.
The Hack: Download an alternative app like BOTIM or Zoom before you arrive, or simply use a VPN (though be aware of the legal grey areas around VPN usage).
